May is National Teen Self-Esteem Month. It is a perfect chance to remember the importance of ensuring that teens are self-aware and feel confident within themselves. Self-esteem is everything towards developing physical and mental well-being and is the focus of this month.
I Am Worth More
“I Am Worth More,” a non-profit that works to connect teens with helpful resources, sponsors National Teen Self-Esteem month. Further, this organization attempts to increase teens’ positive entertainment intake. “I Am Worth More” was started in 2007.
The teenage years are a difficult time. Teens face physical, hormonal, and emotional changes in an ever-changing world. Additionally, in years 10-18, teens must contend with social changes, new relationships, peer pressure and impossible societal standards. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that self-esteem at this age is easily damaged and very difficult to repair.
Not surprisingly, research shows that media violence may cause aggressive and antisocial behavior. Moreover, it may desensitize viewers to future violence. Today’s world is filled with racist, sexist, and violent content. The “I Am Worth More” organization fights for more positive imagery in mass media. Therefore, the aim is to help youth discover they are worth more than any limit that society tries to create.
How to Participate
Throughout May, organizations are hosting programs and events all over the country. Overall, the goal is to engage parents, educators and youth to address, boost and build confidence, and vocalize needs. Iamworthmore.org provides a toolkit for planning events and workshops.
