February is American Heart Month. The first Friday in February is National Wear Red Day. It is a day to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women. On February 4th, women are encouraged to wear red in some way – whether it be pants, a top, shoes or something simple like lipstick.
The American Heart Association & National Wear Red Day
The American Heart Association supports National Wear Red Day. It focuses specifically on raising awareness of women’s heart disease and stroke risks as cardiovascular disease is the cause of death in 1 out of 3 women every year. It is the leading health related cause of death in women. However, 87% of all heart issues are thought to be preventable. In other words, this makes awareness, education, research, and resources vital in the fight against women’s heart disease.
The Month of February & All Things Heart
February is the month people celebrate holidays of the heart – making it the perfect month to celebrate American Heart Month and National Wear Red Day. In fact, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared February National Heart Health Month in 1964 after he himself suffered a heart attack nine years prior.
