There are many ways to welcome the New Year. Typically, people enjoy New Year’s Eve parties, preparing a special meal, watching fireworks, and making resolutions for the new year. However you enjoy welcoming the New Year, stay safe and stay healthy.
Good Luck Food
While there isn’t a traditional meal for New Year’s Day, like for instance a Thanksgiving turkey, there are a number of foods that are thought to bring good luck into the new year. For example, an old Spanish tradition, the 12 lucky grapes, is believed to bring good luck in the new year if all 12 grapes are eaten at the stroke of midnight, one for each clock chime. In the event all grapes are not eaten in time, the superstition is that misfortune will carry into the new year. Other good luck foods include pretzels, pork and sauerkraut, pickled herring, lentils, soba noodles, tamales, king cake, and a dish called hoppin’ john.
New Year’s Resolutions
Resolutions are a New Year’s tradition that many enjoy. Most often, a resolution for a positive change in the new year. Often times resolutions are personal goals related to health, fitness, traveling, or financial freedom. Prepare for success in the coming year by planning your resolutions and following through with your goals.
Firework Safety
If you set off fireworks for a personal show, enjoy them safely and take precautions to avoid risks. Never light a firework from a covered area or indoors. Additionally, only ignite fireworks in a clear area without flammable objects or other hazards. Keep a bucket of water and fire extinguisher nearby to put out fireworks. Always dispose of fireworks appropriately after ensuring every firework and all debris extinguish completely.
Monitor children closely and at all times when holding sparklers or igniting fireworks. Glow sticks, noise makers, silly string, glitter poppers, and confetti are great alternatives to sparklers and fireworks.
Be aware of local laws and regulations regarding use of fireworks. Pay attention to any active bans as individuals caught with fireworks could be subject to fines. Additionally, in the event someone is hurt because of a firework display, the injured person may be in a position to file a claim against the individual responsible for the show.
