Nobel Prize Day, also known as Nobel Day, is observed annually on December 10th. The Nobel Prize Award Ceremonies occur the same day. This ceremony is when Nobel Prizes winners receive their awards. Considered by many to be the most prestigious awards in the world, Nobel Prizes are awarded in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, economics, and peace.
Establishment of The Nobel Prize
On November 27, 1895 Alfred Nobel signed his third and last Will at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris, France. Nobel’s Will stipulated his family use much of the wealth he left behind to establish the Nobel Prize. Nobel established several categories of prizes for accomplishments created for the betterment of mankind. Following his death, the first prizes were awarded in 1901.
The Nobel Prizes Awarded: Where?
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the physics, chemistry, and economics prizes. However, the Karolinska Institute awards the physiology or medicine prize Swedish Academy awards the literature prize. Meanwhile, the only Nobel Prize not awarded in Stockholm, Sweden is the one for peace. Rather, the location for the award’s bestowment: Oslo, Norway by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Why? Because during Nobel’s life Sweden and Norway were united. The winners receive a diploma, a medal, and 10 million Swedish crowns per prize (equal to a little over 1 million US dollars).
