Families across the country are staying indoors to attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19, leaving their homes for essential reasons only. In many parts of the country, outdoor exercise is considered essential and is a good way to get out of the house to maintain your health and well-being. With Alaska temperatures rising, more people will flock outdoors to ease cabin fever. It is important however to practice social distancing while outdoors during this trying time.
Trails
If you choose to leave the house for outdoor exercise, it is recommended that you use trails and paths close to home. Public trails can become crowded and may not be maintained during this time. If you must use public trails, practice good trail etiquette. If you need to stop on the trail, move completely over to the side. Do not gather in groups and ensure you leave at least 6-feet of distance between yourself and everyone else. If you are unable to maintain a safe 6-foot distance, leave the area.
Paved Roads And Sidewalks
In some parts of the country, roads are being closed to traffic to provide additional space for cyclists, runners, and walkers. Alaska has not quite got to this point, but that does not mean it will not happen.
Ensure that when using paved roads and sidewalks, you are being safe. Make sure you are visible to drivers at all times. Use crosswalks when crossing intersections and wear bright colors. Do not let the warm weather fool you, ice is still present in some places. The breakup and potential ice can cause you to slip and fall while out exercising.
Before You Go
Before leaving your house, ensure you plan ahead and take essential items with you. You may want to use the bathroom before you leave because many public restrooms are closed to slow the spread of COVID-19. Further, carry sanitizer so you can regularly sanitize your hands while away from soap and water. Pack an emergency safety kit, especially if going out with children. Planning ahead is imperative during this time as “normal” resources are not available.
Exercise is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and is a good way to boost your immune system. It is also important to follow local rules and guidelines to protect yourself and others.
