Alaska has beautiful summer weather and long summer days to enjoy but these benefits include additional risks. If you are out walking, especially at dusk, dawn or in inclement weather, practice good pedestrian safety by following a few basic tips to protect yourself from injuries.
Know Your Surroundings
Knowing your surroundings is important and can be accomplished by keeping your eyes and ears open for vehicles and cyclists. Looking down at your phone or listening to loud music through headphones will decrease your ability to be alert. Put your phone away and pay attention to what is happening around you.
It’s important to follow the rules of the road and to walk in safe places. Use designated crosswalks when available and wait for indicators when crossing the street. If a sidewalk is not available, walk on the right side of the road facing traffic. If you pass behind driveways, check for rear tail or brake lights to make sure vehicles are not backing up.
Make Your Presence Known
Wear light colored or reflective clothing to make yourself more visible to others around you, especially late at night or early in the morning. When possible, make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before crossing in front of vehicles. If you are crossing the street, do not stop in the middle of the street or change directions unexpectedly.
Do not walk around intoxicated, alcohol affects your decision-making ability and increases the risks associated with pedestrian accidents.
If you are injured as a pedestrian, the at-fault party may be held responsible. It is important to know that your own vehicle insurance may also be available to assist with claims.
