In Alaska, icicles are a concern during winter months. Icicles form around the edge of houses, vehicles and other objects and can cause injury when not properly handled.
How Do Icicles Form?
Icicles form when snow buildup starts to melt and drop off a surface. The most common cause of icicles is due to heat inside the home causing snow on the roof to melt. As snow melts, water droplets freeze and form icicles on eaves and gutters. Excessive ice buildup can damage gutters.
Why Is It Important To Handle Icicles?
Icicles can become heavy and fall off the roof, injuring yourself or another person. Additionally, icicles forming is a sign of ice dams on a roof. An ice dam forms when ice freezes to the lower edge of the roof and causes snow to be trapped. As snow melts, the water buildup can leak into the roof and cause damage to the ceiling or attic.
Prevent Ice Buildup
To prevent ice buildup, start by ensuring your home is insulated well. Add insulation as needed to the attic to reduce heat escaping through the roof. Insulate attic doors or access panels with weather stripping. Remove heavy snowfall and buildup on roofs using a push broom or roof rake. Remove icicles by tapping them with a wooden stick, make sure to check the area under the icicle to avoid damage to personal items or injury.
