While many people believe it won’t happen to them, over 800,000 people are victims of vehicle theft each year. It’s often assumed that it is less likely for a car to be stolen in Alaska than in other states. Unfortunately, that is not the case. July is Reduce Vehicle Theft Awareness Month, which is fitting considering vehicle theft is most prevalent during the summer months. Here are some habits to adopt and security devices to consider using to prevent your vehicle from being stolen.
Helpful Habits to Protect Your Vehicle
Lock your car – even while driving. Keeping your vehicle locked at all times is a great initial barrier to someone who wants to steal, or break into, your car. Additionally, always roll up all windows when leaving your vehicle unattended. When parking, try to find a well lit area and if possible, park near security cameras.
Never leave your personal belongings or keys inside or nearby your vehicle. Keep your keys on your person, or in a safe place that wouldn’t be associated with your car or truck. Always remove valuable items from your vehicle before leaving it unattended.
Vehicle Security Devices
Theft prevention technology can help deter thieves and also assist police in recovering a stolen vehicle. Installing a car alarm, kill switch, or tracking device could be your best defense against a vehicle thief.
Brake locks and steering wheel lock bars create a barrier that can delay a thief long enough to lose interest in stealing your car. These devices can make it more challenging to steal your vehicle and can thereby make it a less appealing target.
