Accidents happen and can leave you stranded on the side of the road. Whether you have a flat tire, break down or auto accident, it is important to plan ahead so that a bad situation does not become worse. It is equally as important to watch for others stranded on the side of the road. There are a few things you can do as someone who is stranded and as someone passing a stranded person to practice good roadside safety.
Stranded On The Side Of The Road
If you find yourself stranded on the side of the road, it is important to move as far over from the road as possible. Watch for passing cars when getting out of your vehicle to avoid being hit. If possible, exit through the passenger side. Ask your passengers to also exit the vehicle and stand off the road several yards.
Prepare ahead by having proper equipment such as cones, lights or flares to notify passing traffic. Place cones several yards behind your vehicle and turn your flashing lights on in your vehicle. It is also a good idea to hang something white from the driver side door so that passing drivers can see the vehicle is not moving. The white object can be anything from a t-shirt to a paper towel. Roll the window down slightly, insert the white object and then close the window.
Call for roadside assistance or emergency assistance. If you are in an accident and someone is suffering from injuries, then call for emergency assistance. If you are broke down, call for roadside assistance to get help.
Move Over
If you are driving and see a vehicle at a stop on the side of the road, move over to the far lane. If you are unable to move over then slow down while passing any vehicles.
Alaska Statute 28.35.185 discusses “Overtaking and Passing Certain Stationary Vehicles”. The law states that vehicles must move over when there are two or more lanes of traffic or drivers must slow down.
Most importantly, pay attention while behind the wheel of a vehicle. Never text and drive as it interferes with your ability to properly watch the road.
Paying attention to vehicles on the side of the road and preparing for situations will make the roads safer for everyone. If you suffer injuries while stranded on the side of the road, you may need to hold the other party responsible for their actions.
