UNDERSTANDING ALASKA LAW
Alaska Law § 28.05.095 requires all occupants of a car to use seat belts, or age and size appropriate safety restraints. Failure to use seat belts can be a basis for police to stop a car. People who don’t use seat belts face a fine.
UNDERSTANDING BASIC PHYSICS AND CAR CRASHES
Studies show the dangers of not using a seat belt. In an unrestrained crash, there are actually three sequential impacts, leading to injury or death. The first collision occurs when the occupied vehicle and an external object (another car, a tree, etc.) impact. The second collision involves an unbelted occupant crashing into the interior of the vehicle – This collision is totally preventable by the use of a seat belt. It is also responsible for most injuries sustained in car crashes. The third collision happens when the internal organs of an occupant’s body strike his/her skeletal structure or chest wall. It is important to understand that unbelted occupants become projectiles within the confines of their own car. They present a risk of injury to other passengers as well. Adults are more dangerous to small children this way.
SEAT BELTS ARE NOT OPTIONAL
In Alaska, seat belts are required by law, as they reduce both injury and death. People who allege that seatbelt restraint is more dangerous – are kidding themselves in all but the rarest situations. There is simply no safe way to ride in a car without a seat belt.
