Driving near semi trucks can be scary and sometimes even tense, but when sharing the road with semi trucks there are a few things to know. Semi trucks are large, require additional space, need more time to maneuver basic driving actions.
Semi trucks are much larger than other vehicles and require consideration from other drivers.
The blind spot on semi trucks is much larger. If you are unable to see a truck driver’s reflection in the side mirror, then you are in their blind spot. The blind spot can cause truck driver’s to switch lanes without seeing your vehicle, causing an accident.
Semi trucks also need more space to maneuver and turn due to the size of the truck and trailer. If a semi is turning right, do not attempt to pass the semi and get in the way of of the turning truck.
Passing or getting passed by a semi truck takes longer than normal passing times.
If a semi tries to pass you, slow down to allow them time to get around your vehicle. If you want to pass a semi, pass on the left hand side when possible and maintain your speed. Once you fully pass a semi, make sure you can see the cab of the truck in your rear view mirror before getting over in front of the semi. Semis require more time to stop and will not be able to stop quick enough if you do not provide enough space in front of the semi when switching lanes.
If you are in an accident with a semi truck and the accident was due to the negligence of the driver, you may be able to file a claim.
