Springtime is often known for rain showers and wild flowers, but in Alaska Spring is usually a bit different. Spring, more commonly known as Breakup in Alaska, brings a number of weather changes.
With extreme variations in temperatures, extended daylight, and the occasional snow storm comes a medley of seasonal obstacles. Expanding potholes, flooded yards and ditches, and a mix of muddy, slushy, and icy roads are only the beginning. Dramatic changes in temperature causing ice to melt and refreeze can lead to slippery conditions on roadways and sidewalks alike.
Take Precautions
Use ice melt on stairways, walkways, driveways, and parking lots to prevent slip and fall accidents. Be aware of your surroundings and take caution before walking down outdoor stairways or across an icy parking area or driveway. Use handrails when available and take a trekking pole or a walking stick to help support you while on walks, whether on trails or pathways. Wearing ice or traction cleats attached to footwear greatly increases traction and stability when walking across ice.
Slipping and falling while walking on ice can lead to serious injuries. Common injuries from slipping and falling on ice include head injuries, such as concussions, along with herniated discs, and bone fractures. The most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) is falling. Furthermore, over 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling sideways and landing on the pelvis.
What To Do After A Slip And Fall Injury
Don’t ignore symptoms of injuries. Always see a health care provider to diagnose your potential injuries following a harmful accident. The sooner you’re able to see a doctor, the sooner you’ll be able to properly heal.
If you slip and fall on someone else’s property take photos of the area where the fall happened and request video from any surrounding buildings. Write down details of the event, such as what the weather was like and why you were there. If there are witnesses ask for a statement of what happened from them as well. In some instances, you may have a claim against the property or business owner. It’s important to hold those liable accountable for negligence to avoid future injuries to others.
