More people will be cooking out as Alaska continues to experience warmer weather. With the pandemic and related health mandates, there are limits on which outdoor activities can be enjoyed. Luckily, we can still safely enjoy the outdoors as long as we are not too close to others. Since May is National Barbecue Month, it is a great time to discuss barbecue safety.
Grill Responsibly
Be aware of potential hazards and always be prepared for emergencies and accidents. Preview your surroundings, and your grill, before starting it up. Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby when cooking outdoors to prevent spreading fires.
It is especially important to emphasize the need to keep clean during this pandemic. Sanitize your grill, barbecuing area, and yourself before and after cooking. Have a safe and fun cookout by taking preventative action and following the ABC’s Of Grill Safety.
Safely Social Distance
Some neighborhoods host barbecues, which can be safely enjoyed during the pandemic. Maintain a safe boundary between yards or driveways. Consider creative ways to interact with neighbors and friends while maintaining a safe distance.
Do not share tools, utensils, food or furniture with others and ensure to properly sanitize areas and items. Stay a minimum of six feet away from anyone outside of your household to avoid contact. Explain the importance of distancing to children.
Oscar Mayer‘s recent commercials show a great way to have a safe barbecue while enjoying fresh air and seeing people outside of your home. Use #FrontYardCookout on Twitter posts throughout May to donate a meal to the non-profit Feeding America.
Practice Good Etiquette
Remember that neighbors and friends want to protect their families. Preventing the spread of COVID-19 is not only about yourself and your family, but also about protecting others and allowing others to protect themselves. Practice understanding and patience during this time as people develop a new “normal”.
