Driving safely helps keep everyone on the road out of harm’s way and starts with you. To make sure that you do not contribute to a crash, consider learning the three P’s of driving: prepare, protect and prevent.
Prepare
Preparing takes little time and is as simple as vehicle maintenance. Make sure you always have good tire tread and windshield wipers on your vehicle. If you are planning a long trip in your vehicle, it is important to check fluids, tires and windshield wipers. Walk around your vehicle frequently to check for low tire pressure and other potential issues.
Protect
Protect yourself and passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle wears safety belts. Children should be in appropriate safety seats facing the correct direction for their ages and heights. Children under 12 are safer in the back seat, even if the front seat is available.
Do not drive while distracted, plan routes before leaving and do not text, eat or play with the radio while driving. Driving alert protects yourself and others on the roads, as well as your passengers.
Prevent
Preventing crashes starts with you. Avoid intoxicated driving by designating a sober driver before ever getting anything to drink. If weather conditions are poor, slow down and increase distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Pay attention to the road and be aware of cyclists and pedestrians. Avoid drowsy driving by getting plenty of rest, especially when driving extended periods.
If you notice dangerous or distracted drivers on the road, try to stay away from the driver and report the activity to the local police agency.
Safer driving can reduce the risk of being involved in an accident.
