Over the last several decades, the overall trend has been for car accidents resulting in fatalities to reduce yearly. However, between 2015 and 2016, the number of deaths caused by crashes suddenly increased from 22,741 in passenger vehicles to 23,793. Car occupants are the most likely to be involved in a fatal crash, making it extremely important for drivers to be cautious on the roadways.
While there is no obvious reason why the number of deaths increased, it’s possible that changes in laws and the number of vehicles on the roads plays a role. Regardless of the reason, it’s necessary to discuss ways to reduce your risk of being in a collision. Here are three tips to help avoid car crashes:
1. Pay attention at all times
Don’t answer your phone, look away from the road to change the radio station or take unnecessary risks when you’re behind the wheel. You should only drive if you’re prepared to focus on the road ahead of you.
2. Report dangerous drivers
If you see someone driving too fast, too slow, recklessly or appears intoxicated, report him or her to the police. Even if everything is okay, it’s better to make the report then to end up in a collision when that driver makes a mistake. An early report could prevent crashes with your vehicle and others.
3. Maintain your vehicle
Make sure you maintain your vehicle. Check the tire pressure, get enough fuel and monitor other aspects of your safety inside the vehicle. A malfunction could lead to an unnecessary crash.
