Deep frying turkey grows in popularity each year and is a great way to free up oven space in the kitchen. There are however several risks to consider before taking on the task of turkey frying to avoid disaster.
Preparation
With a bit of preparation, you can avoid unexpected situations and have a safe holiday. Start by setting up a location for the fryer, on a level and dry surface. Make sure to have a grease rated fire extinguisher near the area you plan to fry your turkey. Turkey fryers should not be used in rain or snow.
Thaw out and dry the turkey completely so that no ice or water remains on the bird. Pour grease into the fryer before turning it on and do not overfill the fryer.
Frying The Turkey
The actual act of frying the turkey is not difficult but it is important to follow a few precautions. Wear safety equipment like oven mitts and eye protection.
When you are ready to fry the bird, turn the burner off before placing the turkey in the oil. After you completely submerge the turkey, turn the burner back on.
Never leave the turkey fryer unattended and monitor the turkey closely while frying. If your fryer does not have thermostat controls, make sure to watch closely, using a separate thermostat to monitor temperatures.
Ensure children understand the importance of staying clear of the area while using the turkey fryer. Monitor pets to make sure they do not knock over the fryer.
Once the turkey is finished frying, turn the heat completely off before removing the turkey.
Cleanup
Let the oil cool down before removing the pot from the burner. Place the fryer on a level surface and allow it to cool overnight before disposing of the used oil.
