Today, January 14, 2022, we celebrate the U.S. Ratification Day. On January 14, 1784, the United States signed the Treaty of Paris. This treaty officially ended the American Revolutionary War. On this day, we acknowledge the efforts of all those who contributed to our country’s independence.
History
U.S. Ratification Day marks when the Treaty was complete. However, the Treaty was drafted nearly a year earlier. The U.S. Continental Congress approved preliminary articles of peace on April 15, 1783. Then, the Treaty was signed on September 3, 1783. Ratification proved problematic, though, as the weak Articles of Confederation could not enforce attendance or assembly. On January 13, 1784, the last delegate, from South Carolina, appeared and a vote was finally taken.
How to Celebrate
There are many ways to observe U.S. Ratification Day. Firstly, visit the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. At the museum you can browse through memorabilia and learn more about the war, itself. Next, visit the Maryland State House where the Continental Congress met to sign the Treaty of Paris. Lastly, fly the same flag that was flown over the Maryland State House. The flag features13 stripes, but also 13 stars on the blue background.
