Vehicles with unsecured loads are some of the most dangerous on the road. When a vehicle has an unsecured load, it is possible the load could fall off the back or roll into the road. This could lead to accidents, injuries, and deaths. In Alaska, June 6th is ‘Secure Your Load Day’ to raise awareness of the hazards of hauling loads on Alaskan roads.
Driving Behind A Vehicle With An Unsecured Load
Vehicles should be extra cautious when following a truck with an unsecured load, a car with a load strapped loosely to the top, or any other vehicle with a load not secured tightly. If you are driving behind a vehicle with a load and you are unsure if it is properly secured, safely pass the vehicle or slow down to allow ample space between you and the other vehicle. At high speeds, falling objects or loads become projectiles that can pierce through windshields or block a driver’s vision. Some items, especially larger ones, can lead to rollover crashes as they knock vehicles off balance.
Types Of Unsecured Loads
When thinking of unsecured loads, most people immediately consider commercial and construction vehicles hauling rock, dirt, large machinery, or other materials. However, private vehicles can also drive with unsecured loads. For example, a truck hauling trash, debris, or wood may not properly secure items. Further, a car with luggage, boxes, or sporting items attached to the roof may not properly secure the load.
Know The Law
In Alaska, it is illegal to drive with an unsecured load. If you are hauling anything at all, properly take time to secure all objects. Even a plastic bag blowing from the bed of a truck can cause serious damage in some circumstances. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the roads safe for others. If you suffer injuries due to someone else’s negligence, it is up to you to hold that party responsible for their actions.
