It is well known that Alaska winter’s are cold. In Alaska, we plan ahead for the cold weather by winterizing vehicles to make sure cars handle the harsh conditions. It is also important to focus on vehicle maintenance in colder climates.
Basic Winterizing
There are a few basic things locals do to their vehicles in Alaska to get them through the winter weather. The first step is to outfit your vehicle with a battery warmer, an oil pan warmer and install an auto start system. The warmers will keep fluids from freezing so that vehicles start during freezing temperatures. Check all fluid levels regularly and ensure you use winter weight fluids, changing from summer weights, if necessary. Auto start systems make it easier to warm up vehicles, and while they are convenient, they are not completely necessary. Another helpful thing to add to your vehicle is winter windshield wipers and an ice scraper. The wipers help combat ice during winter months and the scraper always comes in handy.
Tires In Winter
Tires are one of the most important things to consider during winter. All season, winter tires, studded tires and even tire chains are all options for better traction during winter. More importantly however is tire pressure for any tire you choose. When temperatures drop, air pressure in your tire will also drop making it important to check regularly and maintain tire pressure at the manufacturers recommendations.
Winter Safety Kit
Finally, pick up a winter safety kit for your vehicle. Make sure the kit includes items like jumper cables, a blanket or coat, non-perishable food, a flashlight and first aid. Kits can be purchased pre-packaged or can be built and customized.
To get through the Alaskan winter, it is important to focus on being proactive and practicing preparedness.
